In terms of energy expenditure per kilometre travelled, nothing can beat cycling. Not walking, not swimming, not horse-riding, and certainly not driving a car. This site explains more.

Cyclists should pay road tax, huh?
This is an often mooted argument. Copenhagenize the Planet blog does an excellent job of explaining why the anti-congestion and health benefits of cycling should mean cities ought to PAY people to cycle!

This US site contains in-depth information on calculating the costs of motoring versus cycling. Much of the data is old (and, anyway, 'gas' is much more expensive in the UK!); but you soon get the picture, motoring has many, many hidden costs, not least of which are the wider societal costs...
